500 yr. flood

The flood came just months after an epic two-year drought in the region. Washed-out roads and flooded freeways in our area caused commuter headaches and land locked residents. The Chattahoochee River in northeast Atlanta rose to a height not seen since 1919. The flooding around Atlanta this week is one for the record books. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the rivers and streams had magnitudes so great that the odds of it happening were less than 0.2 percent in any given year. In other words, there was less than a 1 in 500 chance that parts of Cobb and Douglas counties were going to be hit with such an event. Nathan now has bragging rights because his shed survived a 500 year flood.

Traffic on the connector meets rising flood waters.

Six Flags over GA

An aerial view of our town.

This was our only damage from the rain. At this point our grass couldn't sink any further and our new hole began to hold water. We were also without water for a half day, a house phone, cable and Internet for 5 days & we are still on a boil water alert with regards to water consumption from the tap. Drinking water was scarce in the stores, employees were even harded to spot, and one day I passed Target (once I could get beyond a few streets) and saw porta johns lined up outside of the store.
...
FUN Photos from kiddies who were missing a week of school and just needed to venture out into the rain.
These pictures crack me up. Harrison wanted to make sure his little sister had her hood all the way up. Then Hailey grabs onto her big brother and get tugged along as her new strides are still wobbly.

Hailey stomping around in her red raincoat.

H & H

Soaked...but she loved every minute of it.

All the kids love this drain. It's the best spot for water splashing and it collects sand and silt for messy mud pies. I just have to watch them closely when they venture over there, esecially Hailey because it's a pretty big opening.

Enjoying the pumpkins on Celia's porch.

Looks like H&H had a great time in the flood!!! Nothing like sloshing around in the puddles with a big umbrella in tow... They are so cute together!!!

Love the pumpkins on your neighbors front porch... Bought a few for our porch last week..

Be safe everyone... Careful with the tap water...A.Valerie

Whoa! That's a lot of rain... I couldn't believe the pictures. It's a relief to know your house can stand a 500 year flood and not get wet!
